IB History Is Changing: What the New Course Means for Students Starting in 2026
The International Baccalaureate has redesigned Diploma Programme History for students who begin teaching in August 2026 and sit their first examinations in May 2028. The course still asks students to investigate evidence, compare interpretations and construct historical arguments, but the content architecture, all three examination papers and the internal assessment have changed. A student entering the course in 2026 should therefore use the new guide and new specimen material, not simply inherit a folder of strategies written for the previous syllabus.
2027 Changes for AP World History, AP European History, and AP U.S. History: What Changed for the AP History Exams
Starting in May 2027, all three AP history exams require students to answer three source-based short-answer questions, write one broad long essay question, and work with a document-based question that may cover a wider chronological range. Course content, multiple choice, scoring rubrics, and evidence requirements remain unchanged. AP European History is May 4, AP World History: Modern is May 6, and AP U.S. History is May 7.
2027 Changes for AP French, AP Spanish Language, AP German, AP Italian, AP Chinese, AP Japanese, and AP Spanish Literature
AP French, Spanish Language, German, Italian, Chinese, and Japanese are redesigned for 2026–27. Each course adds a yearlong cultural project, an April 30 Personalized Project Reference deadline, a Project Presentation, and a Project Q&A. The six exams become fully digital and place free response before multiple choice. AP Spanish Literature also moves fully into Bluebook, but it does not adopt the project and keeps its existing literary course structure.
Every Confirmed AP Change for 2026–27: A Subject-by-Subject Guide to the 2027 Exams
The 2026–27 AP year includes major course redesigns, smaller timing revisions, digital-delivery changes, clarified content, updated policies, and new career courses. The first deadline is April 30, 2027, for world-language Personalized Project References; regular exams run May 3–14. Students should replace old-format practice only where the task or clock changed. A new Course and Exam Description cover does not automatically mean a new exam.
AP or IB? How to Choose the Right Academic Challenge Without Burning Yourself Out
AP and the IB Diploma can both be rigorous. The better choice is the programme your school supports and you can sustain—not the label that sounds most prestigious.
