Complete Digital SAT Overview

What Is the SAT?

The SAT is a digital college-admissions assessment developed and administered by the College Board. It measures the reading, writing and mathematical knowledge and reasoning skills students are expected to develop during secondary school and use in college.

The test contains two sections: Reading and Writing and Math. Reading and Writing contains 54 questions completed in 64 minutes, while Math contains 44 questions completed in 70 minutes. The total testing time is 2 hours and 14 minutes, with a ten-minute break between the two sections.

98 Total questions
2 hr 14 min Testing time
4 Adaptive modules
400–1600 Total score range

The SAT uses multistage adaptive testing. Performance in the first module helps determine which version of the second module the student receives. Reading and Writing tests comprehension, inference, evidence, vocabulary, rhetorical revision, grammar and punctuation. Math tests Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry.

SAT scores range from 400 to 1600. Effective preparation should combine content review with timed practice, familiarity with Bluebook, analysis of mistakes and full-length official practice tests.
