IELTS Academic: How Is It Different from IELTS General Training?
IELTS Academic measures whether you can use English effectively in higher education and other academically demanding environments. Although it shares two sections with IELTS General Training, its Reading and Writing tasks are specifically designed to assess academic comprehension, analysis and written communication.
1. IELTS Academic Is Designed for Higher Education
IELTS Academic is generally taken by students applying to undergraduate or postgraduate programmes and by people seeking professional registration in fields that require a high level of English. The test evaluates whether candidates can follow extended arguments, identify important information, interpret evidence and communicate ideas in a formal academic style. IELTS General Training, by contrast, is usually intended for migration, employment, vocational training and study below degree level. You should choose the version required by the university, professional association, employer or immigration authority receiving your score.
2. Academic Reading Uses Longer, More Analytical Texts
The Listening and Speaking tests are the same in IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training, but the Reading sections are different. Academic Reading contains three extended passages written for a general academic audience. The texts may present detailed descriptions, explanations, evidence, arguments or competing viewpoints and can include diagrams, graphs or illustrations. Candidates must answer 40 questions in 60 minutes using skills such as identifying main ideas, locating details, following an argument, recognising a writer’s opinion and distinguishing claims from supporting evidence. General Training Reading instead begins with everyday and workplace materials before progressing to a longer general-interest passage.
3. Academic Writing Task 1 Requires Visual Analysis
In Academic Writing Task 1, candidates describe, summarise or explain visual information presented in a graph, chart, table, map, process or diagram. The response must contain at least 150 words and should identify the most significant features rather than list every individual detail. In Writing Task 2, candidates write an essay of at least 250 words responding to a point of view, argument or problem. Task 2 carries more weight in the Writing score. General Training candidates write a letter rather than a visual report in Task 1, although both versions require an essay in Task 2.

Both tests use the same IELTS band scale and assess four language skills, but their Reading and Writing tasks reflect different educational and practical purposes.
