How the IELTS Speaking test works

The real test is a recorded, face-to-face interview lasting about 11–14 minutes. Academic and General Training candidates take the same three-part Speaking test.

Part 1. Introduction and interview — familiar questions for about 4–5 minutes.
Part 2. Long turn — one minute to prepare, then one to two minutes of speaking.
Part 3. Discussion — a broader, more abstract discussion for about 4–5 minutes.

Examiners assess fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation.
