IELTS Academic & General Training

What Is the IELTS Test?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an internationally recognised English-proficiency test used for university admission, professional registration, employment and migration. It assesses a candidate’s ability to communicate in English across four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

0–9 Band-score scale

Results are reported on a band scale from 0 to 9, with candidates receiving a separate score for each section and an overall band score. Universities, employers, professional organisations and immigration authorities set their own score requirements, so candidates should always check the precise requirements of the institution receiving their results.

IELTS is offered in two principal versions: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. IELTS Academic is mainly intended for degree-level university study and certain forms of professional registration, while IELTS General Training focuses on the practical English used for migration, employment, workplace training and study below degree level. The Listening and Speaking sections are the same in both versions, but the Reading and Writing sections differ.

The complete test takes approximately two hours and forty-five minutes. Listening lasts approximately 30 minutes, Reading and Writing each last 60 minutes, and the Speaking interview lasts 11–14 minutes. Effective preparation combines continued English development with targeted section practice, careful review of mistakes and full-length timed testing.

About the Official IELTS Test

IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP IELTS and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. Use official sources when confirming test requirements or booking an exam because availability, fees and registration procedures may vary.
