Phonics and CVC Words

Phonics teaches children how written letters connect to spoken sounds. Learners begin with consonants and short vowels, then move into consonant blends, digraphs—two letters working together, such as sh—and later vowel teams and diphthongs, in which vowel sounds glide together, such as oi in coin.

A CVC word follows a consonant-vowel-consonant pattern, as in cat, bed, and sun. Lessons 1–5 build a short-vowel CVC foundation. Lessons 6–10 use familiar blends, digraphs, consonant clusters, and silent-e extensions so kindergarten learners can keep practising useful decodable words without relying on obscure vocabulary.
