GED subject criteria
The GED is not organized by course codes. It has four separately scheduled test subjects: Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, and Social Studies. Jurisdiction rules vary, so students must check the official GED policy page for age, residency, identification, pricing, retakes, and whether preparatory coursework or an official practice score is required.
The tests emphasize reasoning with information rather than memorizing a single textbook. Official GED Ready practice is the closest readiness check. The summaries below are study criteria, while the current official test-subject pages control timing, tools, question formats, and policy.
Reasoning Through Language Arts
Read closely, identify evidence, analyze arguments and relationships, revise written English, and produce an extended evidence-based response.
Mathematical Reasoning
Apply quantitative and algebraic reasoning, solve problems, interpret graphs/functions, and use the on-screen calculator where permitted.
Science
Interpret scientific information, experiments, data, graphs, and evidence across life, physical, and earth/space science contexts.
Social Studies
Analyze civics, government, U.S. history, economics, and geography sources, arguments, charts, and evidence; it is not primarily a memorization test.
